Shownotes:

rrori.jpgWell well well, it has been a while since we last spoke! This week, we take a look at Uncle Ben’s “Ready Rice”. This is more of a side-item than a meal, but it is delicious. It cooks in 90 seconds, and the result is PERFECT rice. There are many flavors to choose from at the store, including Teriyaki, Yellow Rice, Rice Pilaf, and many others.

I forgot to give the nutrition info during the show, so here it is. This is for the “Original Long Grain”, which is just your standard rice. Here is the info:

  • 1 container = 2 servings
  • 230 calories
  • 3 grams of fat
  • 0 grams of sodium!!
  • 0 cholesterol!!

Also, how many pounds of food do we eat every year?

By Adam

This week, I am at a coffee shop in Waycross, GA. I believe the name is “Hot Toddy’s” or something like that. Jeff is out with his wife this week, so he will be back for next week’s show. I hope everyone had a great break from work! Here is the review for this week:

Lean Cuisine Cafe Classics Bowls: Grilled Chicken Ceasar
From their website: “Herb-grilled chicken tenderloins tossed with freshly made garlic flavored radiatore pasta in a creamy Parmesan- Caesar sauce with red peppers and broccoli florets.”

This is a delicious meal, and somewhat filling (compared to others we have reviewed). All of the ingredients mix well together. The chicken is very tender and has a nice flavor to it. The ceasar sauce that goes on everything is very good, unlike anything I have ever had before.

10 Diet Rules Meant to be Broken

By Adam

Get ready to rid yourself of some myths that have been ingrained into your mind. WebMD has a great article on some myths relating to losing weight. For example:

5. When you blow your diet, you might as well wait until the next day to get back on track.
Nothing could be farther from the truth, Heller tells WebMD.
“Every meal matters, so if you ate that big old piece of birthday cake at lunch, get right back on track with your next meal,” she says. “You don’t have to have a full day of healthy eating in order for it to count.”

I have never really believed that one, but I have lived by it. I guess it is just an excuse to put off a healthy diet. Regardless, enjoy reading these!

What to do with all that chicken!? Ask "Minute Meals"

By Adam

I found a great website that basically will give you recipes based on what you select from their dropdown menus. For example, if you selct “Microwave” from the “Cooking Method” menu, it will show you every recipe they have that use a microwave. The kicker is that each recipe is a quick and easy meal.

Check it out

The Importance of Breakfast

By Adam

I am not one that habitually eats breakfast, but maybe I need to start. Remember how mom always said that it was the most important meal of the day? Well, it actually is. For example:

It keeps you healthy: Eating breakfast may reduce your risk of serious illnesses like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer, and it strengthens your immune system so you’re more resistant to common ailments like colds and the flu. [Yahoo Health, link below]

I know with me, I usually eat very little or nothing at all for breakfast, and by lunch time, I am starving. This is bad because I usually end up eating too much (I mean, 2 frozen meals? Come on). This article from Yahoo Health has some great tips on just what you should eat for the most benefit. From the article:

Grab-and-Go Breakfast
Prep time: 1 minute 1 medium apple 1/2 pint fat-free milk 1 bran Vita muffin 1 pack Skippy Squeeze Stix peanut butter Slice the apple, grab the milk, muffin, and peanut butter, and go. Squeeze the peanut butter out of its pack onto your apple slices as you eat.

Benefits: Vita muffins (vitalicious. com) contain 100 percent of your recommended intake of several important nutrients, including vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, and E. Foods high in monounsaturated fats — like peanut butter — may boost testosterone levels. This meal should help you burn energy more efficiently and lift more weight at the gym.
Per meal: 506 calories, 20 g protein, 87 g carbohydrates, 12 g total fat, 15 g fiber

That sounds easy enough, and certainly quick. For more ideas, read the article.

Episode 008

The Quick Bite
Episode 008
12/12/2007

This week, Jeff is at a Hockey game, so his review is called in. And, we have a caller this week!

Adam’s Pick
Healthy Choice Classic Grilled Chicken BBQ

This meal is in the “Completes Selections” line of meals. This means you get a full meal in the box rather than just a main course. This meal consisted of a decent sized grilled chicken breast covered in BBQ sauce, roasted potatoes, broccoli florets, and a peach dessert.

The chicken itself was very tender and juicy, and had a nice flavor to it, especially with the BBQ sauce on it. The potatoes were alright, but the texture of them gave it an overall odd flavor. The broccoli florets were pretty standard as far as taste goes. They seemed to cook to perfection. And finally, the peach desert was delicious. It was a nice cap to the meal.

Overall, this was a great meal. Filling, great flavor, and surprisingly healthy considering all you get.

Nutrition Info:
270 calories
3g fat
430mg sodium
7g fiber
Weight Watchers Points: 5 (wow!)

Jeff’s Pick:
Jeff calls in this week and goes Christmas-y with gingerbread men. When the holidays come around, these cookies fit right in. Wonderful, delicious.

3.5g fat/serving (probably a few cookies, he didn’t specify)

Plus, how much SPAM is going around?

Mood Foods

By Adam

A recent article in Men’s Health Magazine suggests that the type of foods we eat can have a direct effect on our moods. For example:

Your Mood
: Stressed You have to meet a deadline without being overwhelmed.

Your Meal: A handful of sesame seeds while you’re working

Here’s Why: Stress hormones can deplete your body’s supply of magnesium, reducing your stress-coping abilities and increasing your risk of developing high blood pressure, says Elizabeth Somer, R.D., author of Food & Mood.

The article goes on to cover anxiety, restlessness, and depression, among others. It is a very interesting look at how we can easily combat some of these moods.
